Commercial Grease Trap Cleaning

Grease traps and interceptors prevent fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from entering the drainage system. Regular professional cleaning is a legal requirement under the Water Industry Act 1991 and a condition of most commercial kitchen insurance policies.

What Is a Grease Trap?

Protecting Your Drainage System from FOG Contamination

A grease trap (also called a grease interceptor or grease separator) is a plumbing device installed in commercial kitchen drainage systems to intercept fats, oils, and grease (FOG) before they enter the main sewer network.

Without regular cleaning, grease traps become saturated and cease to function, allowing FOG to enter the drainage system. This causes sewer blockages, environmental pollution, and can result in enforcement action from your local water authority.

Under the Water Industry Act 1991, businesses are legally responsible for preventing FOG from entering the public sewer. Failure to maintain a functioning grease trap can result in fines and prosecution.

Prevents sewer blockages and associated fines
Maintains compliance with the Water Industry Act 1991
Reduces risk of drain odours and pest attraction
Protects your insurance cover
Avoids costly emergency drainage call-outs

Legal Requirement

Under the Water Industry Act 1991 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990, commercial kitchen operators are legally required to prevent grease from entering the public sewer. Thames Water, Anglian Water, and other water authorities enforce this requirement and can prosecute operators whose discharges block the sewer.

How Often Should a Grease Trap Be Cleaned?

High-volume kitchen (fast food, takeaway)Every 4–6 weeks
Medium-volume (restaurant, pub kitchen)Every 8–12 weeks
Low-volume (café, care home)Every 3–6 months

Frequency depends on kitchen volume, menu type, and trap capacity. We assess your system and recommend the correct schedule at your free site survey.

Our Process

How We Clean Your Grease Trap

01

Site Assessment

We inspect your grease trap, measure capacity, and assess the level of FOG accumulation before beginning work.

02

All accumulated grease, solids, and wastewater are pumped out using specialist vacuum equipment. The trap is then thoroughly cleaned.

03

Inspection & Report

We inspect the trap for damage, check baffles and inlet/outlet pipes, and provide a written service report.

04

Scheduled Maintenance

We set up a recurring maintenance schedule so your trap never becomes non-compliant. No admin required from you.
